The Greenham Common Fence Comes Down, 1983
The Greenham Common fence comes down 1983. On the 5th September 1981 a small group of Welsh women arrived outside the Greenham Common Air Base to protest against the decision to site US cruise missiles there. No-one would talk to them, so they stayed. And so began the Women's Peace Camp with at times up to 70,000 protesters circling the base, and non-violent direct action - the tearing down of fences, and base invasions. Arrests, privations, mud, rain and evictions - nothing could drive them away until 1991 when the last missiles were withdrawn. 8.7.1983.
